Terry flicked ash towards the ashtray missing again. There was a soft knock at the door. ‘It’s open’. He looked up and smiled slightly. But there were tears in Jane’s eyes as she turned the key in the lock behind her.
‘They're talking about us again’ she said ‘why can’t we just put it out
in the open?’ Terry shrugged a response, not wanting to be drawn into an
argument.
Jane sat on the bed and put her head on his shoulder. He stroked her
hair absent-mindedly.
‘Don’t worry about them; they’re bored, they’re gossiping, telling lies?
Well, that’s no surprise.’ Terry’s Coventry accent was rough with cigarettes
and the strain of singing every night on a long tour.
‘But they’re not lies are they, Terry?’ By contrast Jane’s squeaky Wisconsin accent sounded fresh and perky. She sat up and
looked at him. ‘You don’t mind fucking me, but you don’t want to take
responsibility for it. So we creep around, hiding, holed up in hotel rooms. But everybody knows Terry,
it’s an open fucking secret.’
‘There’s a weapon we can use in our defence, you know? Silence.’
‘Terry, this is not a lyric to one of your fucking songs. You act like it
doesn’t matter what they say. But it’s hurtful.’
‘Don’t worry, it's just talk, no one listens anyway, it’s just jealous games that people
play.’
‘But why can’t we just be open, why do we have to live a lie? Are you
ashamed of me Terry?’
Terry sighed, this was not what he wanted, it was meant to be a bit of
fun.
‘You know why, I’ve told you why a hundred times.’ He looked right
through her as he spoke lighting a cigarette and passing it to her and then
lighting one for himself.
Silence hung in the air. Terry’s look told Jane he was not about to discuss this any further.

She took in a lungful of smoke and sighed heavily.
‘So our lips are sealed then.’ Jane said sadly as she unbuttoned his shirt.
Terry nodded ‘Our lips are sealed’ he repeated undoing her bra with a single flick of his fingers.

This is an imagined reality story. Based on this Wiki entry about this song.
The Go-Go's were supporting The Specials on the latter's 1980 US tour. According to Wiedlin she and Hall had an affair despite him having a girlfriend back in England and this led to their co-writing the song. The Go-Go's version is significantly more upbeat than the Fun Boy Three one, which Wiedlin describes as "gloomier"—arguably, this reflects their respective points of view of the relationship.
